FOOD & WINE PAIRING

food and wine pairing

Food & Wine Pairing, What wine pairs best with my meal? My answer — depends on what you like. Some drink ONLY Merlots while others ONLY drink Whites or Blushes. Simply remember that wine should always compliment the food and not dominate it. And vice versa.

Wine Was Drank Out Of Necessity

Wine has been in existence since Biblical times. It was often more sanitary than water supplies, and as such, was a staple at meals.

.

Historical Times

British merchants in the 1600s and 1700s paired wine and cheese based on the philosophy, ‘buy on an apple and sell on cheese.’ Meaning that if a wine tastes pleasant with an apple, it is truly good wine that will pair well with cheese, making it easier to sell. The high sugar and acid content in fruit can make wines taste metallic, while hard cheeses soften the tannins in wine and make them taste full-bodied and fruitier.

Food & Wine Pairing Rule Of Thumb

The most common rule of thumb is a simple one – the wine should match the color of whatever sauce is served with the dish. Spaghetti, by this rule, would benefit most from a red wine. Fish with a citrus-mushroom sauce would best be enjoyed with white wine. If the dish does not include a sauce, make the meat the main attraction. Lamb or heavier meats favor a red wine in general, and chicken or fish (lighter meats) accordingly go with lighter, white wines. And of course, the quality of the wine comes into play.

But Now Tradition Is Out

The old wine adages such as “White wine with fish; Red wine with meat” are no longer observed. The first thing to consider in pairing is YOUR preference, as drinking a type of wine you don’t care for isn’t going to be a pleasure, even if it is “the perfect pairing”.

WINE PAIRING EXPERIMENT !!!!

food & wine pairing

An easy exercise to develop wine selection is the pairing of wine with fruit or cheese. Cheeses tend to have very distinctive textures and flavors, and the difference between cheddar with Merlot and cheddar with Chardonnay is readily apparent to even first-time tasters. The best advice is simply to experiment!
